What is the AKC Canine Good Citizen Program?

The AKC Canine Good Citizen program is one of the most recognized training certifications in the country. It tests dogs on ten real world skills including loose leash walking, greeting strangers politely, responding to basic commands, and remaining calm around other dogs and distractions.

Dogs who pass the ten item evaluation earn an official AKC CGC title, a meaningful credential for therapy dog certification, housing requirements, and beyond.

At Barks & Rec, your evaluator is on site for every class. No separate test date, no extra fees. Pass the class, earn your title.

What to Bring

A standard six foot leash and a flat buckle collar. No retractable leashes or prong collars please. Martingale collars work well for anti-slip

High value treats your dog already knows and loves. Think small, soft, and smelly. Boiled chicken, hot dogs, or your dog’s favorite training treat cut into pea sized pieces. Bring more than you think you need. Basic treats will be available in class but nothing motivates like what your dog knows from home.

A treat pouch if you have one. Extras are available if needed.

A mat or small blanket if your dog has one they are comfortable with. Mats will be provided but familiar items from home can help your dog settle faster and focus better.

The goal is a comfortable, motivated dog. Whatever helps yours show up ready to work, bring it. Use the link below to find suggestions for various gear for training related purposes.
